Advantages of Tubular Screw Conveyors
There are several advantages to using this type of screw conveyor:
There are relatively low manufacturing costs involved compared to other conveying procedures such as belts, pneumatic devices or aeromechanical machines.
They are highly suitable for conveying dry or semi-fluid bulk materials in an entirely enclosed space, thereby reducing the threat of hazardous contamination, dust, spillage and subsequent waste.
Tubular screw conveyors require little storage space and can be used in compact environments, making them flexible for smaller manufacturers. In addition, thanks to their design, they can, if needed, be installed at an angle in situations where a height difference needs to be overcome.
The design is highly versatile and provides a range of solutions for the handling and transporting of granular and powdery materials.
They are easy to install in-house and require little maintenance and cleaning, thanks to high-quality stainless steel and steel sealing techniques.
Thanks to their design, they have a long service life, adding to their cost-effectiveness.
Tubular screw conveyors can be angled from 0 to 90 degrees for flexible movement and transportation. This is also advantageous because they can be used in a horizontal or vertical position and any incline needed to handle particular products. In addition, they can operate with significant pressure differences.
Tubular screw conveyors can be designed with flights, bearings, covers, inlets, outlets and mountings according to your own specifications and needs.
What is A Screw Conveyor Trough?
The screw conveyor trough on a screw conveyor is the housing that contains the screw and that the powder bulk material rides on. Like most screw conveyor parts, the term has some loose affiliation with the agricultural industry. The trough, or screw housing, being similar to that of a pig trough. Some people call it the housing or U-tough and there are a few other terms that have been thrown around, too.
Selecting the proper screw conveyor trough is very important because the material being conveyed is enclosed by it. The conveyed material induces abrasive wear and can eventually wear a hole in the trough, posing a major safety concern from both the exposure to the moving screw and the exposure of the material in the trough to the atmosphere. Most troughs come in standard lengths of up to either 10ft or 12ft and are usually made of some light gauge material like 12GA or 7GA mild steel (A36). The shape of the trough is important, too. The most common configuration is the U-shaped trough, but round, flared and rectangular troughs are common, too.
In the case of long screw conveyors with multiple screws connected using hanger bearings, the trough also support the weight of the screw, in addition to conveying the material. Because of this, the trough rigidity and alignment are important to the long term success of the screw conveyor. In most cases, a standard trough is rigid enough for a standard screw and hanger. If a nonstandard length screw is used, the trough must be evaluated to see if it can support the heavier weight of the screw. If the screws are being supported with hanger bearings then the alignment of the trough will influence the alignment of the screws. Screws that are out of alignment can rub the trough, fatigue the shaft and/or cause accelerated wear of the hanger bearing.
Replacement of the trough is usually pretty easy. There are 6-12 bolts located at each end that once removed (and the screw supported) the trough can be removed and replaced. Patch kits are also available if a hole wears in a specific area. Patch kits are made of abrasion resistant material and conform to the outside shape of the trough.
Selecting the proper trough for your application can be one of the most important decision in ensuring the screw conveyor has a long and productive life. With so many options, it can be hard to know which ones will be right for the application and how much impact the option will have to the cost of the trough. The following factors break down the major considerations when selecting a screw conveyor trough. This information is also useful in illustrating how various options can have huge impacts in the cost of a screw conveyor.

Trough Screw Conveyor VS Tubular Screw Conveyor
Trough screw conveyors and tubular screw conveyors are two common types of mechanical conveyors used to transport bulk materials. While both types of conveyors are used to move materials from one point to another, they differ in their design and application. Here are some key differences between the two:
Design
Trough screw conveyors have a U-shaped trough that runs horizontally, while tubular screw conveyors have a cylindrical tube that runs vertically or horizontally.
Capacity
Trough screw conveyors are generally larger and can handle higher capacities than tubular screw conveyors.
Material Handling
Trough screw conveyors are better suited for handling wet or sticky materials, while tubular screw conveyors are better suited for handling dry materials.
Flexibility
Trough screw conveyors are more flexible in terms of their ability to handle different materials and flow rates, while tubular screw conveyors are more rigid and are best suited for handling materials with consistent flow rates.
Maintenance
Trough screw conveyors are easier to maintain and clean due to their open design, while tubular screw conveyors can be more difficult to maintain and clean due to their enclosed design.
The choice between a trough screw conveyor and a tubular screw conveyor will depend on the specific application and material handling requirements. Trough screw conveyors are generally better suited for handling wet or sticky materials, while tubular screw conveyors are better suited for handling dry materials with consistent flow rates.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Flexible Screw Conveyor
Increasing Conveyor Performance and Efficiency
Due to their relatively low cost and simple construction, flexible screw conveyors are one of the most common types of conveyors used by manufacturers. The reason for this is that the screw is the only part of the conveyor that moves. The only other major components are the tubular housing, and the electric motor that drives the screw (also called the auger).
Despite its uncomplicated, yet reliable construction and straightforward operation, many end-users overlook important factors that could potentially lead to poor performance, excessive power usage, severe wear, and material degradation. For these reasons, it is essential to consider all system parameters when selecting conveyor options. Only then can you ensure a correct and successful installation that achieves maximum operational efficiency.
Specifications
The flexible screw conveyor has a helicoid screw that rotates inside a fixed tube. Screw conveyors typically range in diameter from 2 1/2 to 8 inches, and can be used for horizontal transports of up to 80 feet, and inclines of up to 60 degrees. An 8 inch diameter screw conveyor can transport 1,800 cubic feet/hour at 360 RPM at a 45 degree angle. The flexible screw is made from stainless steel, and is available in round, flat, square bar, and beveled edge configurations. As the screw rotates, it creates directional force that moves the product through the tube. At the same time, it also creates centrifugal force that moves the material against the wall of the tube.
Material Characteristics
The characteristics of the material being conveyed is an extremely important element to consider when selecting any conveyor. Flexible screw conveyors can move many types of materials, such as powders, crystals, flakes, granules, pellets and irregular shapes. But even then, you need to consider how the material will affect the conveyor, as well as how the conveyor might affect the material. For example, certain materials – such as TiO2 or salt – have the potential to create friction within the flexible screw conveyor. This can cause some particles to be crushed, heated, or chipped during transport. In addition to having a negative effect on the product itself, material friction can cause the conveyor's motor to be overtaxed, increasing wear and eventually leading to failure if left unchecked. Or, the actual material being conveyed could build up on the screw and cause it to stall.
Flexible Screw/Auger Types and Characteristics
There are many auger designs to choose from, each addressing the challenges presented by different material characteristics. To get the best results possible from your flexible screw conveyor, select the auger type that best suits the material you need to convey.
Flat wire augers are used for conveying powders or other light materials, and are made of rectangular or square wire. The flat conveying surface wire. The flat conveying surface applies a more positive forward directional force on the product being conveyed and reduces the outward force against the tube wall.
Beveled or Square Bar
This type of auger is specifically designed to convey difficult-to-handle or fragile material with minimal product degradation or damage. The beveled auger must be installed straight. It maintains a much lower maximum allowable RPM level, and operates at a maximum of 600 RPM.
Round Wire
These flexible screws are made from a coiled round bar, and are mainly used for heavy or highly abrasive materials. The biggest asset of this auger design is its strength and flexibility, which minimizes the load imposed on it by material weight, particle shape, or material size. The round wire auger design creates high slippage and stronger outward forces on the conveyed product.
Centercore
Flexible Screw Conveyor Center Core | Hapman.comThis is a small tube placed in the center of the screw and extends the full length of the auger. The centercore restricts the space by reducing the amount of material allowed to enter the conveyor, which in turn reduces the load imposed on the screw. Use a center core when conveying very dense products or highly aerated or fluid product.
Capacity and Power Requirements
Many factors affect capacity and power requirements. The most common elements to consider are material particle size, material bulk density, material flowability, conveyor length, auger rotation speed, conveyor diameter, helicoid pitch, and conveyor incline angle. Optimal operation will depend strongly on the conveyed material, the RPM of the auger, and the filling degree of the system.
